Submit Your Own Vignette

If you have a “racial vignette” -- a problematic interaction or incident across the color line -- please consider submitting it to this Website.  You can also write a commentary about the incident if you like.  Whether you are a person of color or a European American this is an opportunity to help others become more aware of the subtle kinds of racism or prejudice that still plague us today.

Guidelines for submitting your own vignette:

The incident should illustrate some kind of subtle racism or cultural incompetence, not overt bigotry  -  the kind that is harder for white folks to spot.

The incident should involve a white person.  Yes, there are black people who have prejudice toward Japanese Americans and Chinese Americans who negatively stereotype white people.  No argument there.  However, this Website is specifically geared toward freeing white people from the bondage of their particular brand of racial conditioning.  Since whites are generally at the top of the power structure in the U.S., it is our unexamined racism that has the potential of doing the most damage to others.

The tone needs to be respectful of all peoples.  Shaming, ridiculing and harsh judging will only turn people off.

The vignette should differ in some way from the existing vignettes.

All vignettes are published anonymously.  Your name will be listed as a contributor to the Website (unless you state that you want it withheld).  The characters in the vignette should also be anonymous.  The purpose of the Website is not to point the finger at specific individuals.

The author/editor reserves the right to decide if a vignette is appropriate for this site.

Thank you for considering to share your story!
